The Daily Tip Jar

Talking about retirement can be one of the less exciting topics in life, but it is something essential.  It’s so hard to accept less money in our paychecks and watch a chunk of it go off to a mysterious place.  Retirement starts now, no matter what stage of life you are in, and there are easy ways to make it seem less daunting and more encouraging.

Start Now

Wherever you are in life, if you haven’t started saving into a retirement plan or retirement savings, there is no time like the present, to help you with the future.  Figure out what you are comfortable saving every paycheck and commit to it.  Even a small contribution is better than nothing.  It’s more important to take the dive and plan for your later years in life.

Make Your Match

There are all different kinds of retirement plans and ways to save.  Find what works best for you.  Chances are your work has a 401K plan or other retirement options.  If you want something quick and easy, that’s your best bet.  If you want to take a more active interest and be involved with your money, do some research, check out the stock market or meet with a financial advisor to guide the way.

Check in on Your Investment

Once you’ve chosen the right retirement options for you, make sure you check in with it every so often to see how it’s maturing and if there are any changes you’d like to make with how you are investing.  When you are younger, you can afford to make more risky investments and take chances, but that will change with age and you’ll invest into more stable options later on.

Ask a Friend

Search within your friend group to find someone who has more experience in retirement and retirement savings.  People will be happy to give you some personal advice and might be a great first step to making sure you are investing the way that is most beneficial to you and your lifestyle.  They might have good connections with a financial advisor they trust or be a great sounding board for ideas.  Going after something with a friend or confidant is always easier than undertaking a task alone.  Ask around work if there is someone who is well versed in the retirement plan options to maximize your involvement.

The most important thing with saving for retirement is just that – saving for retirement.  Start now and know it’s going to a worthy cause – yourself and your future.
